Nelly Furtado’s Hot Girl Vision for ‘Maneater’ | How It Went Down | Billboard
Nelly Furtado shares how she thought up and executed her fiery, hot girl track “Maneater.”
Nelly Furtado:
Hi, I’m Nelly Furtado, and this is how it went down with my song “Maneater.” It was a story that started in Miami, Florida, hot summer night, mid-July. I think it was our first night in the studio together, and so he had some heat to play for me. He was working with Danjahandz, Nate Hills, another producer at the time. We were really jamming really hard to it, and we smelled smoke. We smelled a burning smell. And there was smoke coming out of the speaker, and then a flame came out of the speaker. The truth is, it was like the beat was so ferocious that it kind of frightened us, and we actually didn’t go back to that song after that. When we weren’t scared of the “Maneater” beat anymore, we pulled up the beat and created the song. One of my colleagues was dating this gorgeous woman, and she was just like a total maneater, like just she was so hot and powerful and put together, and kind of just seemed like she was really in control of that beauty and power. That was my inspiration for some of that song. Also was trying to capture, like this badass swag of some of the electro pop bands I was listening to at the time, they sort of had a sexiness in this sort of rock sound, and so we just kind of wanted to bring that into the mix as well.
