Watch a Series of Teenage Boys Explain What ‘Brat Summer’ Is
With Brat Summer in full swing, Billboard and SheMedia are teaming up to see just how wide the reach of Charli XCX’s latest album is.
In a new video posted Monday (Aug. 12), a group of teen boys answer what the term means to them. While the vast majority of participants admit that they’ve “never heard of [Brat Summer] in my life,” there were a few who gave thoughtful responses.
“Brat Summer to me is kind of just this movement of individuals living freely however they want without kind of caring how people perceive them,” one explained insightfully, while another hilariously added, “It reminds me of that expression, I don’t know if I’m allowed to say it: ’Serving c—.‘”
Two songs from Charli XCX’s Brat are currently sitting on the Billboard Hot 100, with “360” and the TikTok-viral “Apple” both cracking the chart. The album is also dominating Hot Dance/Electronic Songs with 16 tracks on the chart, the highest of which, “Apple,” is at No. 4 (so far). Brat has peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Charli’s U.S. Brat Tour is slated to kick off Sept. 14 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
Since its release in June, Brat has become deeply engrained in pop culture and even politics. Charli XCX posted on Twitter, “Kamala [Harris] IS Brat,” and the VP’s presidential campaign responded by swapping in the Brat album’s lime-green color and font on its official account.
